Discover New York in 5 days
A five-day stay in New York allows you to see much more than just a glimpse. It’s long enough to explore the great must-sees, but also to venture into more authentic neighborhoods. Here is a balanced itinerary between mythical places, museums, walks and local atmosphere.
Day 1 – First immersion: Midtown and the symbols of the city
As soon as you arrive, head to Midtown Manhattan, the real beating heart of New York.
Start with Times Square, where we literally find ourselves caught up in the crowd, the light signs and the ambient din. Even if some people find the place too commercial, you have to experience it at least once: it’s the very image of New York that we all have in mind.
From there, walk to the Rockefeller Center, a vast complex of art Deco buildings. In winter, its ice rink is an open-air movie set. Then go up to the Top of the Rock: the view of the city is spectacular, especially at sunset. The advantage over the Empire State Building is that you see exactly … the Empire State Building in the landscape.
Then take a detour to St. Patrick’s Cathedral, just opposite, an unexpected parenthesis of calm and Gothic beauty in the middle of the skyscrapers.
In the evening, dine in the Bryant Park area: the terrace of the Parker & Quinn restaurant or the nearby food courts offer a beautiful local atmosphere.
Day 2 – Central Park and Upper Side Museums
Start your day in Central Park, the green lung of the city. We feel immediately calmed down. Joggers, walkers, street artists and families create a lively and relaxed atmosphere. If the weather is good, rent a bike or a boat at the Loeb Boathouse.
Walking along the park to the west, you will arrive at the Natural History Museum, a real New York institution. The exhibits of dinosaurs and planets are impressive. Even without being passionate about science, this is a landmark visit.
In the afternoon, cross to the other side of the park to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met). It is one of the most beautiful museums in the world: Greek sculptures, impressionist paintings, Egyptian art … There is something to lose yourself in for hours.
On the way out, stroll along 5th Avenue: the windows of the big brands, the elegant buildings and the yellow taxis create a typical New York decor.
Free evening on the Upper East Side or return to Midtown for dinner on a rooftop with a view.
Day 3 – Modern art, architecture and trendy neighborhoods
Start the day at MoMA, the Museum of modern art. Even if you are not a big fan of contemporary art, the masterpieces on display – Van Gogh, Warhol, Picasso – are well worth a visit.
Then continue to the Flatiron Building, whose atypical silhouette always fascinates visitors. A stone’s throw away, Madison Square Park is perfect for a lunch break, especially at Shake Shack, famous for its homemade burgers.
In the afternoon, head to Chelsea to discover the High Line, a promenade suspended above the streets. This is one of my favorite places in New York: we walk between flowers, street art and contemporary architecture, while overlooking the city.
At the end of the route, explore Hudson Yards and its incredible metal structure, the Vessel. Even without going up there, the place is worth a detour.
In the evening, stroll through the Greenwich Village district: peaceful small streets, jazz bars, brick facades, bohemian atmosphere. This is where we feel the most intimate New York, far from the crowds.
Day 4 – Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn: between memory and panoramas
Dedicate this day to the south of the city. Leave early for Battery Park and board the ferry to Liberty Island. The Statue of Liberty always impresses, especially when approaching from the sea. The museum on the island traces its history and its symbolism.
Then stop at Ellis Island, the former gateway for immigrants. The visit is exciting and moving at the same time.
Back in Manhattan, discover Wall Street, the financial heart of the United States. Between the bronze bull and the austere skyscrapers, the atmosphere is unique.
A few steps away, the September 11 Memorial is an unmissable place of meditation. The basins surrounded by engraved names exude an impressive silent force.
In the afternoon, walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. The panorama on the skyline is unforgettable, especially if you go there at the end of the day.
Arrived in DUMBO, enjoy the calm of the neighborhood, the galleries and the famous view of the Manhattan Bridge between the red buildings. An unmissable photo spot.
Day 5 – Latest discoveries and local atmosphere
On your last day, visit Grand Central Station, an architectural gem known for its starry ceiling and majestic lobby.
Not far away, the Chrysler Building stands as a timeless symbol of the Art Deco style. You can no longer climb it, but its facade and its summit remain among the most elegant in New York.
Then go down to SoHo, an artistic district where the old factories have given way to galleries and design shops. It is a perfect place to stroll, buy some souvenirs and enjoy a coffee in a chic industrial decor.
If you want to prolong the magic, end your stay with a Broadway show or a dinner on a rooftop offering a last illuminated view of Manhattan.
This is the best way to say goodbye to the city without really leaving it.
